CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett has called on regional leaders to strengthen regional integration and accelerate the implementation of key decisions under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy.
Speaking at the opening of the 51st Regular Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government in Saint Lucia, Dr. Barnett said the region must deepen cooperation to better withstand global economic and climate challenges.
She highlighted progress in expanding the free movement of skilled workers, boosting agricultural production and strengthening food security under the region’s agricultural strategy. The Secretary-General also pointed to continued support for Haiti, closer international partnerships, and the expansion of CARICOM’s Associate Membership with the inclusion of Martinique and French Guiana.
“The CARICOM Eminent Persons Group continues to work with stakeholders to facilitate dialogue and participation of political and civil society representatives of the people of Haiti, with a view to promoting broad consensus on the pathway and mechanisms to achieving peace and security, and holding credible elections as agreed,” she said.
Dr. Barnett stressed that greater national action is needed to implement regional agreements and ensure citizens benefit from integration.
She also underscored the importance of youth participation and broader public engagement in shaping the future of the Caribbean Community.
“The range of issues confronting our young people dictates that regional policies and solutions for their development cannot be fragmented or reactive. Instead, they must be strategic, anchored in real-world experiences, and empower their participation. We look forward to their perspectives,” she added.
The CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting continues in Saint Lucia under the theme, “From Resilience to Renewal”.
