Following last month’s armed attacks on Guyana’s soldiers along the Cuyuni River, additional security assets have been deployed to safeguard Guyana’s borders.

During a recent press conference, President Dr. Irfaan Ali explained that the decision to beef up security on Guyana’s borders is guided by intelligence and diplomatic engagement.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces emphasised that Guyana has informed its allies about the recent attack and continues to provide briefings as investigations continue.

“We have two new assets and other assets that we are deploying to further enhance the security there. But we are confident about protecting our sovereignty and our borders,” he said.

Meanwhile, referring to the recently established Border Patrol Unit, the President explained that the initiative is working closely with community policing groups.

Together, they are boosting intelligence sharing, increasing monitoring capabilities, providing real-time information and support to Guyana’s border security operations.

President Ali went on to highlight Guyana’s expanding role in strengthening its security infrastructure and contributing to the Shield of the Americas.

“We are a proud member of the Shield of the Americas, a founding member of the Shield of the Americas. This is a like-minded country to ensure the rule of law, democracy is upheld in the region, the protection of our sovereignty, the rooting out of criminal elements including smuggling, drug trafficking and so forth within the region, and the building out of a common security platform,” he explained.
