President Dr. Irfaan Ali has assured the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) that the PPP Government will protect and uphold their interests as they commemorate today their 50th anniversary as a trade union.
The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) proudly marked its 50th Anniversary at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, celebrating decades of service to workers.

The milestone event highlighted the union’s longstanding role in advocating for fair treatment, workers’ rights, and improved conditions nationwide.
Union leaders reaffirmed GAWU’s commitment to defending workers and honouring the sacrifices of those who built the labour movement.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali was commended for what officials described as unprecedented support to the union and its membership.
“We extend our thanks and appreciation to President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and his government…have brought hope to thousands of workers and their communities,” GAWU President, Seepaul Narine said.

Addressing the gathering, the Head of State reminded sugar workers that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic government stood with them and moved to resuscitate the sugar industry.
He noted that billions of dollars have been invested since 2020 to revive the sector inherited in decline.
The President also assured workers that they continue to have a strong ally in the governing party.
“We cannot take away the fact that there would be no GAWU without the People’s Progressive Party,” the president said. “And in 5o years after you must know you have a friend in the PPP Government, you have a partner in the PPP government, you have a commitment to workers in the people’s progressive party government.”
