Former PNCR chairman and parliamentarian Shurwayne Holder is cautioning Opposition MPs against electing an individual facing unresolved extradition charges to the post of Leader of the Opposition.
Following the speaker’s announcement on the impending election, Holder Shared a clip of the speaker’s admonition to opposition MPs regarding the impact on parliament and the country were they to elect an international fugitive.
The former opposition MP says while “some might not be pleased about it,” this fact was officially established by documents presented to Guyana by the US government, having its origin in a competent court of law in the United States.
He is therefore advising MPs on the Opposition benches that “it will be hypocritical for them to complain about corruption, drugs or money- laundering if they choose to elect someone, who has not successfully cleared their name of those very charges.”
Holder says the Opposition MPs credibility are now on the line.
Last evening, Speaker of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir announced plans to meet with non-governmental Members of Parliament (MPs) from the opposition parties on Monday, January 26, to discuss arrangements for the election of a Leader of the Opposition.
Speaking during a live address, he clarified that the responsibility for selecting the Opposition Leader rests with the non-governmental MPs, who must reach a consensus and formally indicate their nominee in keeping with the procedures of the National Assembly of Guyana.
Nadir explained that he has instructed the Clerk of the National Assembly, Sherlock Issacs, to convene that meeting at 10:00 hours.
This development accelerates the completion of the 13th Parliament’s institutional framework, which was officially established on November 3, 2025, when 65 Members of Parliament were sworn in following the General Elections on September 1, 2025.
