Guyana is strengthening its role as a food producer through the Guyana/State of Roraima Food Security Partnership. The initiative is building integrated agro-industrial hubs in Lethem, Berbice, and Essequibo, supported by export ports at Parika and Charity.
President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali says the project is already boosting production, increasing investment, and attracting the attention of CARICOM.
“The entire CARICOM region is now looking at Guyana as the production and distribution [hub] for food. And this is closely integrated with Roraima because whilst we are building out the mega farms, it’s important that we have a partnership with a state like Roraima that is huge in agriculture [with a] productive capacity at a global scale,” the head of state explained.
The partnership with Northern Brazil includes mega farms, processing facilities, cold storage, and new technology to expand production and improve distribution across the region.
“We’re talking about the airport at Lethem so we can export directly to the Caribbean. Then we are looking at creating an agro-industrial hub in Lethem to bring raw produce to add value [and] do all the packaging for Caribbean and North American market,” he added.
With this integrated approach, Guyana aims to create jobs, strengthen food security, and cement its position as a central hub for agriculture and exports in the Caribbean.
