Guyana’s participation in the Pan American Cup 2025 came to an end on Friday as both Shemar Britton and Olympian Chelsea Edghill were eliminated in the round of 32 at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) tournament in San Francisco, USA.
Britton faced a challenging encounter against the USA’s Nandon Naresh in the evening session of the main draw.
Despite showing resilience throughout the match, he ultimately fell 4-1.
The match began with Britton losing the first set 11-5, but he showed improvement in the second, narrowly losing 11-9.
His determination continued in the third set, but he was edged out 12-10.
In an effort to stay in contention, Britton fought back to take the fourth set 11-9, but he was unable to maintain momentum, losing the decisive fifth set 11-7.
Earlier in the day, national champion Chelsea Edghill also exited the competition after a tough battle against Ecuador’s Angelica Arellano.
Competing in her first tournament of the year following a training stint in Cuba, Edghill lost the opening two sets but managed to recover and win the third.
However, she struggled in the final stages, dropping the last two sets to lose the match 4-1.
The Pan American Cup 2025, sponsored by JP Morgan, provided players with the opportunity to earn ITTF ranking points and compete for a share of the US$20,000 prize awarded to semifinalists in the Singles category.
Additionally, the tournament served as a gateway to the ITTF Singles World Cup, set to take place in China later this year.
With Britton and Edghill’s eliminations, Guyana’s campaign at the tournament has officially concluded.
