The long-awaited rehabilitation of the Linden/Soesdyke Highway has officially commenced, marking the start of a US$161 million project.
The project, awarded in August 2024, is being carried out by local company GuyAmerica Construction Inc. and Trinidad-based Namalco Construction Services Limited.
Work began this week with the removal of the existing asphalt surface and the laying of crush and run material on the western side of the highway, just beyond Millie’s Junction heading toward Bamia.
GuyAmerica Construction has taken precautions to ensure the safety of motorists in the area, urging them to exercise caution when traveling through the construction zone.
The project, which involves the rehabilitation of a 73-kilometer stretch from Soesdyke to Linden, is expected to take approximately two years to complete.
The construction work is being overseen by a firm from Kuwait, which has been contracted to supervise the project for US$1.7 million.
This highway rehabilitation is the first project in Guyana to be funded by the Islamic Development Bank.
The government has emphasized that this upgrade is critical for improving connectivity, particularly for hinterland communities that rely on the highway as a key transportation route.
The project includes the construction of 10 bridges and five additional structures along the Soesdyke to Linden stretch of road.
