The drainage infrastructure along the East Coast of Demerara has been further strengthened with the commissioning of a rehabilitated pump station at Montrose.

The $220 million facility, equipped with a 200-cusec pump, will serve over 4,000 acres of farmland and provide flood relief to communities including Montrose, Success, Mon Repos, Better Hope, Vryheid’s Lust, and Plaisance.

Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha highlighted that over the past four years, the government has invested more than $11 billion in acquiring pumps and developing drainage infrastructure to mitigate the impact of flooding.

“This will help to significantly reduce the risk of flooding and ensure that our farmlands and communities remain protected,” Minister Mustapha stated.

He also announced that several additional pump stations will be commissioned in the coming months, with three set to become operational within the next two weeks.

These projects are part of a nationwide initiative to establish a comprehensive and climate-resilient drainage system.

For 2025, the government has allocated $73.2 billion toward upgrading and expanding Guyana’s drainage and irrigation network, ensuring long-term sustainability for the agricultural sector and vulnerable communities.
