Fire Destroys Silvertown Community Centre, Disrupting Key Services

January 23, 2025

The Silvertown Community Centre was tragically destroyed by a fire of unknown origin on Tuesday night, leaving the once-vibrant hub in ruins.

The fire, which broke out around 10:00 PM, consumed the top floor of the building, rendering the facility unusable.

Patrick Caesar, also known as Zar, manages the community centre and recounted the distressing events of that night.

He was in bed when he became aware of the fire, and by the time help arrived, the upstairs area was completely burnt.

The centre, a key resource for the Silvertown community, was known for hosting various events and offering services such as free internet access for local students to complete assignments and homework.

“This place served a real purpose for the community,” Caesar shared, emphasizing the significance of the centre’s role in supporting local students.

The loss of the centre, especially its vital educational services, has left many residents deeply upset.

The Silvertown Community Centre was also used for a range of community and school activities and served as a registration site for the region’s $100,000 cash grant program.

Community members are now left hoping for the quick reconstruction of the centre, so that local youths can benefit from its services again.

At this time, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and further investigations are ongoing.
