The University of Guyana (UG) has officially received institutional accreditation after 61 years of operation, marking a major milestone for the institution.

The university successfully met 16 out of 17 required standards, a move that will allow credits earned at UG to be easily recognized by universities internationally.

Accreditation is a thorough process that ensures an educational institution meets national and international standards for academic quality.

This achievement will give prospective students confidence in choosing UG as a reputable institution for higher learning and will simplify the transfer of academic credits to other accredited universities worldwide.

The accreditation was confirmed during a ceremony attended by senior officials, including the Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand.

She highlighted the importance of the accreditation, noting that it elevates the status of UG graduates, making them more competitive when applying to other accredited universities.

In her address, UG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paloma Mohamed, acknowledged the significance of the accreditation, describing it as a monumental achievement for the university.

She expressed pride in the institution’s efforts and commitment to providing quality education.

The National Accreditation Council’s Executive Director, Dr. Marcel Hutson, confirmed that the accreditation will remain valid for the next five years, allowing UG to continue building on its academic strengths and offering students a globally recognized education.

This achievement is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the university’s growth and increasing its global recognition.

The University of Guyana now joins the ranks of accredited higher education institutions worldwide, ensuring its students receive the best opportunities for academic and professional success.
