A new $191.4 million state-of-the-art pump station has been officially commissioned in Trafalgar, Region Five, aiming to strengthen agricultural productivity in the region.
The facility, launched by Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha, is expected to directly benefit approximately 13,000 acres of rice fields and livestock pastures by improving water management.
Equipped with four electrically driven pumps, the station has the capacity to drain 89,766 gallons of water per minute, ensuring effective flood control and irrigation support for farmers.
Minister Mustapha highlighted that this project is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance agricultural infrastructure and safeguard livelihoods dependent on drainage and irrigation systems.
The 2025 national budget has allocated $104.6 billion to the agriculture sector, with $73.3 billion specifically set aside for the expansion and upgrading of the country’s drainage and irrigation systems.
This investment reflects a continued commitment to modernizing Guyana’s agricultural framework and ensuring sustainable growth.
Additionally, Minister Mustapha inaugurated a new $110 million wharf and shed at the Three Door Koker landing site.
The upgraded facility is expected to provide improved infrastructure for local fisher folk, creating a more efficient and safe working environment.
These developments are part of the government’s broader initiative to enhance agricultural and fisheries sectors, reinforcing its support for farmers and fisher folk across the country.
