The Government of Guyana has allocated $8 billion to the sports sector in the 2025 national budget, nearly doubling last year’s investment, as part of its commitment to infrastructure development and athlete advancement under the “One Guyana” initiative.
The budget prioritizes the expansion of sports facilities across the country, with plans to complete ongoing projects and begin new construction on major infrastructure.
A new international stadium is among the key developments, alongside the continued upgrade of over 450 community grounds.
Additionally, funds have been set aside for the installation of premium lighting at various sports venues to facilitate nighttime activities and increase accessibility.
A significant portion of the budget is also aimed at talent development.
This follows a government initiative in 2024, where four track and field experts were brought in to identify and train emerging athletes, resulting in 23 individuals receiving specialized coaching.
In 2025, this effort will be further strengthened through the establishment of an elite sports program to provide structured pathways for athletes progressing from grassroots to professional levels.
Last year, the government allocated $4.6 billion to the sector, which included $1 billion for ground upgrades and $957 million for the construction of multi-purpose sports halls in Regions 1, 3, 7, 8, and 9, as well as sports facilities in Regions 2 and 10.
The increased allocation this year is expected to accelerate the completion of these projects while supporting national sports associations in their ongoing development efforts.
The government’s approach aligns with its broader vision of fostering sports excellence, improving facilities, and providing more opportunities for athletes across all levels.
