Contractor to Be Blacklisted Following Aubrey Barker Road Utility Pole Collapse

By Celestine Chacon, January 18, 2025

One of the contractors involved in the collapse of utility poles along Aubrey Barker Road in South Ruimveldt late last year will be blacklisted, following the completion of an investigation into the incident.

This was revealed by Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, Vice President and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), at a press conference on Thursday at Freedom House.

The investigation, conducted jointly by the Ministry of Public Works and the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) company, has resulted in a recommendation to the tender board to blacklist the responsible contractor.

Dr. Jagdeo further disclosed that the investigation is ongoing, and additional disciplinary actions will be taken against other individuals involved in the incident.

The Vice President emphasized that the government would not tolerate any misconduct by contractors or engineers working with state agencies.

He urged individuals and businesses to report any cases of corruption or substandard work, assuring that such reports would be thoroughly investigated, even anonymously if necessary.

The collapse of several utility poles in December caused significant disruptions, including days of blackouts for residents of the area.

Dr. Jagdeo had previously called for the termination of those responsible for the faulty work that led to the incident.
