Prime Minister Confident Gas-to-Energy Project Will Meet Deadline

By Delicia Janneire | January 8, 2025

Prime Minister Brigadier Retired Mark Phillips is optimistic that the Gas-to-Energy (GTE) project will meet its completion deadline, despite ongoing progress and logistics.

Speaking at his year-in-review press conference this week, the Prime Minister provided updates on several key energy projects, including Gas-to-Energy and the Amaila Falls Hydropower initiative.

The Gas-to-Energy project, once completed, is expected to generate 2,100 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity annually, significantly reducing electricity costs by 50 percent.

Prime Minister Phillips expressed confidence that the project would start producing electricity by the third quarter of 2025, with most of the necessary equipment already in the country or en route.

In addition, the Prime Minister addressed the long-term development of the Amaila Falls hydropower project, which is slated to unfold over the next five years.

A request for proposals has already been made, and following evaluations, construction is expected to begin.

The feasibility of the project has been confirmed through prior studies, reinforcing the government’s commitment to renewable energy solutions for Guyana’s future.

The ongoing energy projects are poised to significantly enhance the nation’s energy infrastructure, reducing costs and supporting sustainable development.
