Health Ministry Achieves UNAIDS Goal with 95% of People Aware of HIV Status

Jan 2, 2025

The Ministry of Health has successfully met the United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) objective, with 95% of persons living with HIV in Guyana now aware of their HIV status.

This milestone was announced by Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, during his end-of-year press briefing.

Dr. Anthony credited the achievement to the Ministry’s dedicated efforts to increase awareness and access to HIV testing and treatment services across the country.

He emphasized that the 95% figure aligns with UNAIDS’ global target for HIV testing.

Additionally, Dr. Anthony reported that 41% of individuals living with HIV are now virally suppressed, meaning they cannot transmit the virus.

The Ministry plans to continue its efforts to ensure that all individuals on treatment achieve viral suppression in the coming year.

To further reduce the spread of HIV, Dr. Anthony urged citizens to take advantage of available initiatives such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and self-testing options.

These measures aim to improve access to care and support the global fight against HIV/AIDS.
