Health Ministry to Enhance Human Resource Capacity in 2025

By Celestine Chacon, NCN News – December 31, 2024

The Ministry of Health has announced plans to significantly expand the human resource capacity within Guyana’s healthcare sector in 2025.

This initiative aims to address staffing challenges brought on by migration and the growing demands of a rapidly expanding healthcare system.

As part of these efforts, the Ministry has implemented hybrid training programs across the country to provide local training for healthcare professionals.

This year alone, the Ministry enrolled over 2,100 people in these programs, with plans to enroll another 1,000 individuals in 2025.

The training initiative is designed to equip doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers with the skills required to meet the demands of new facilities, including six new hospitals currently under construction.

In addition to local training, the Ministry is exploring the possibility of bringing in overseas-based professionals to fill critical staffing gaps, ensuring that the new hospitals can be fully staffed and operational when completed.

The Ministry’s long-term plan is to decentralize training programs, further enhancing the capacity of local healthcare workers to manage the expanding needs of the sector.

These efforts are part of a broader strategy to strengthen Guyana’s healthcare infrastructure and ensure that the country’s medical services continue to improve and meet the needs of its growing population.
