The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) is planning significant changes for the country’s national rugby players in 2025, according to President Ryan Dey.
This follows an average performance by the national team at the Rugby America’s North (RAN) Sevens tournament in Trinidad and Tobago in November.
Dey, a former national player turned administrator, acknowledged the national team’s underperformance despite having a strong lineup at the regional competition.
He indicated that there would be a renewed focus on preparing the team to be “game-ready” for future competitions.
In addition to improving the senior men’s team, Dey highlighted plans to strengthen the youth and women’s rugby programs.
He emphasized the need to invest more time and resources in these areas to ensure long-term development of rugby in Guyana.
The GRFU president also shared that the union is looking into organizing friendly international series with other Caribbean nations.
This move is expected to provide the national team with more competitive matchups and further opportunities for growth.
Guyana’s senior team placed seventh in the RAN Sevens tournament, which was won by Canada.
The Canadian team triumphed over Trinidad and Tobago with a 38-0 victory in the men’s final, while Mexico claimed the women’s title by defeating Jamaica.
The GRFU is focused on revitalizing Guyana’s rugby scene in 2025 with these new initiatives and a commitment to fostering young talent and expanding the sport’s reach.
