The long-awaited Horse Racing Authority Bill, a crucial piece of legislation aimed at shaping the future of horse racing in Guyana, was officially introduced on December 18.

The bill marks a significant milestone for the sport, culminating after years of consultations and drafting.

Industry stakeholders expressed enthusiasm over the potential impact of the new legislation.

Horse racing, often referred to as the “Sport of Kings,” has been steadily growing, with increasing prize money, more participants, and a rising number of supporters.

Javid Ali, the owner of several top horses including the 2024 Guyana Cup winner Olympic Kremlin, welcomed the bill, highlighting its potential to address key issues such as regulation, safety, and transparency.

He emphasized that the new legislation will help the sport’s long-term sustainability.

Nasrudeen Mohamed Jr., Chairman of the Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Horse Racing Committee and owner of Jumbo Jet Racing Stable, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the legislation will elevate the sport.

He pointed out that the bill would make it easier for stables to import horses for races, increasing competition and raising the sport’s profile.

The bill, which has seen several drafts over the past two decades, was brought to fruition under the leadership of Minister of Sport Charles Ramson Jr.

It aims to establish a functioning Guyana Horse Racing Authority that will regulate major stables, officials, jockeys, and handlers.

Key provisions of the bill include establishing clear rules for violations, increasing the Authority’s membership, implementing term limits, and introducing licensing for owners, jockeys, and trainers.

The legislation is expected to enhance the overall structure of the sport, contributing to its continued growth and success.
