Vice President and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, has called for strict accountability from the Ministry of Public Works and Guyana Power and Light (GPL) following the collapse of several utility poles along Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, which left around 2,000 households without power for more than 24 hours.

The incident, which occurred last week, prompted Dr. Jagdeo to express serious concerns. Preliminary findings suggest that the collapsed poles may not have been installed according to the required specifications.

In light of this, Dr. Jagdeo has demanded a comprehensive review of the project’s design, the contractor’s performance, and the engineering supervision involved.

The Vice President emphasized that public infrastructure must be durable, and that there must be consequences for substandard work.

He also pointed out the need for better project management practices to minimize public inconvenience during such construction activities.

As the situation continues to be assessed, Dr. Jagdeo’s call for accountability highlights the importance of ensuring that such incidents do not occur again, and that the necessary steps are taken to ensure the reliability of the country’s infrastructure.
