The recent amendments to the Acquisition of Lands legislation for Public Purposes are expected to significantly reduce delays in infrastructure projects.

This was highlighted by Housing and Water Minister Collin Croal, who addressed the impact of the changes during a recent briefing.

Minister Croal explained that land acquisition, a critical aspect of developing new road networks and infrastructure, has often been a lengthy process.

Challenges related to property ownership disputes have typically required court involvement, which led to significant delays and hindered the timely completion of national projects.

He emphasized that these delays are not in the public interest, nor do they support the timely development needed for national progress.

Among the key projects affected by land acquisition issues are the four-lane East Bank Demerara Highway, the New Demerara River Bridge, and the Schoonard-to-Crane four-lane road.

Minister Croal reassured the public that these projects have been pursued transparently and fairly, with the involvement of all relevant stakeholders.

The recent amendments to the legislation aim to streamline the land acquisition process by introducing clear timelines for negotiations, compensation, and dispute resolution.

These changes are seen as crucial for fostering economic growth and ensuring the efficient development of the country’s infrastructure.

The government believes that these adjustments will play a significant role in improving national development and enhancing connectivity across Guyana.
