Guyanese sprinter Malachi Austin has secured a full athletic scholarship to Louisiana State University (LSU), marking a significant achievement in his career.

Austin, a silver medalist at the Youth Commonwealth Games and the 2024 CARIFTA Games U20 400m champion, will begin his studies and athletic training at LSU in January 2025.

The 17-year-old athlete expressed his excitement and pride over the scholarship, acknowledging its importance not only for him but also for Guyana.

He noted that many young athletes do not have the opportunity to pursue college athletics at the Division 1 level, making this a milestone moment in his athletic journey.

Austin emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between academics and athletics, stating that academic performance is crucial for securing college opportunities.

He stressed that while talent is important, academic achievements are necessary to pursue higher education and sports scholarships.

The young sprinter credited his coach, Julian Edmonds, for playing a key role in his development and expressed gratitude to the U.S. Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole D. Theriot, for facilitating this opportunity.

Austin’s scholarship to LSU represents a significant step forward in his career, providing him with access to world-class training facilities and the chance to compete at the collegiate level.
