The arrival of Guyana’s second power ship is poised to significantly enhance the reliability of the country’s electricity grid, providing much-needed stability until the Gas-to-Energy project becomes operational.
The power ship, expected to be fully integrated into the national grid before Christmas, will supply an additional 75 megawatts of power.
Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has confirmed that the initial contribution from the ship will be 60 megawatts, with another 15 megawatts to follow.
This addition will bolster GPL’s current generating capacity of 207 megawatts, which is necessary to meet the nation’s power demand of approximately 185 megawatts.
The Acting CEO of GPL, Kesh Nandlall, noted that the increased capacity will reduce power outages and enhance service reliability across the country.
The ship’s operationalization comes at a critical time, as energy demands are anticipated to surge during the holiday season.
Incorporating the second power ship into the national grid is part of the government’s broader strategy to modernize and expand Guyana’s energy infrastructure.
The initiative not only addresses immediate electricity demands but also lays the groundwork for future developments, including the Gas-to-Energy project.
With this enhancement, the power supply system is expected to better support both residential and industrial needs, ensuring reliable service as Guyana continues its economic and infrastructural growth.
