The Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Expo, held over two days, brought together more than 40 booths from both government and non-governmental organizations, highlighting Guyana’s efforts to promote transparency, protect rights, and foster accountability.

Key agencies such as the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), the Rights of the Child Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Parliament Office participated in the event, each sharing their roles in combating corruption and advocating for human rights.

NCN News visited the booths to learn about the important work being done by these institutions.

The Parliament Office displayed acts and bills related to human rights and anti-corruption, offering the public access to this information via their website.

This initiative aimed to ensure that citizens understand their rights and the legal measures in place to protect them.

CANU’s technical officer, Curt Richards, emphasized the agency’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination based on religion or gender.

He noted that human rights are central to their operations, with a focus on upholding these rights during their law enforcement activities.

Aleema Nasir, Chairperson of the Rights of the Child Commission, highlighted Guyana’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was ratified to ensure that children receive the rights and protections they are entitled to.

The Commission focuses on educating children about their rights and responsibilities.

Visitors, including students and teachers, were encouraged to ask questions, collect materials, and participate in live demonstrations, leaving the event feeling more informed and empowered.

On the final day, attendees had the opportunity to win cash prizes by answering questions, making the expo both educational and engaging.

The event successfully raised awareness about human rights and anti-corruption efforts, fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of transparency and accountability in Guyana’s governance.
