The Ministry of Labour is launching a two-year training program aimed at empowering women across Guyana with skills in solar panel repair and servicing of electrical appliances.
The initiative, which will begin in January 2025, will see two women selected from each region to undergo intensive training, equipping them with valuable expertise.
Upon completing the program, participants will receive certifications, enabling them to become trainers in their respective regions, spreading their knowledge and skills to others.
Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, emphasized how the program will reduce reliance on outside trainers, especially in regions lacking local expertise.
He noted that in previous training efforts, trainers had to be brought in from the coastland, but this program will empower local women to provide training, keeping resources within their communities.
Minister Hamilton further highlighted that this initiative is not just about skill-building; it also fosters financial empowerment and regional development.
By investing in local talent, the program ensures that economic benefits stay within the regions, promoting greater self-sufficiency.
The Ministry of Human Services selected the women through the Women’s Investment and Innovation Network (WIIN) program.
The World Bank is funding the training, which is supervised by the Guyana Energy Authority and implemented by the Board of Industrial Training.
