Olympic Sprinters Archibald & Abrams Honored at NSC Awards

Two of Guyana’s top Olympic sprinters, Emanuel Archibald and Jasmine Abrams, were honored at the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) Senior Awards ceremony held on Thursday evening at Castellani House.

The event recognized outstanding achievements in sports for the year 2023.

Archibald, a two-time Olympian, was crowned Sportsman of the Year after a remarkable 2023 that saw him competing at the Paris Olympic Games, winning bronze at the Pan American Games, and securing gold at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games.

Jasmine Abrams, who also competed in the Olympics, earned the Sportswoman of the Year title following her silver medal performance at the Pan American Games.

This marks her first national award, adding to her titles as a two-time national champion and South American 400m bronze medalist.

The Junior Sportswoman of the Year award went to Tianna Springer, who had an outstanding 2023.

She captured gold at the South American Under-20 Championship, the CARFITA Games, and the Youth Commonwealth Games in the 400m event.

She also helped secure the 4x400m mixed relay gold at the Youth Commonwealth Games alongside Malachi Austin, Javon Roberts, and Narissa McPherson.

Mark Scott, the coach of Tianna Springer, was named Coach of the Year.

Meanwhile, Keneisha Headley and former West Indies cricketer Reon King were recognized as the Female and Male Sports Officials of the Year, respectively.

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) was awarded Association of the Year, and Olympic swimmer Raekwon Noel received the Junior Sportsman of the Year title.

Minister of Sport Charles Ramson Jr. addressed the gathering, reiterating the government’s goal to continue supporting and developing the country’s sports sector.

He emphasized that the efforts of athletes and officials have borne fruit and will continue to do so.

Trophy Stall, MVP Sports, and Enet were recognized as the top corporate sponsors for 2023 in their respective categories.

Longtime sports journalists Donald Duff of Stabroek News, Claude David of Kaieteur News, and Leon Horatio of the Guyana Chronicle were honored for their more than two decades of service to sports journalism.

In the sports journalist category, Akeem Greene won for non-print media, Avenash Ramzan for broadcast, and Jamima Holmes for print media.
