Guyana Works to Align Commercial and Intellectual Property Laws with CARICOM’s Regional Framework

By Saskia Warrick | November 28, 2024

Attorney General Anil Nandlall has emphasized Guyana’s ongoing efforts to align its commercial and intellectual property laws with CARICOM’s regional framework.

This initiative aims to create a unified legal and commercial space across member states.

Nandlall explained that CARICOM is developing a comprehensive suite of model legislation addressing issues such as copyright, trademarks, business registration, insolvency, and bankruptcy.

Guyana is actively collaborating with CARICOM to implement these frameworks in an effort to harmonize legal standards across the region.

As part of these reforms, Guyana is in the final stages of reviewing the Companies Bill and making amendments to the Business Registration Act.

Ongoing consultations ensure that the proposed changes meet the needs of all sectors involved.

The Attorney General further highlighted that Guyana’s legislative efforts are being carried out within CARICOM’s collective direction.

He reassured stakeholders that no legislation would be finalized without extensive consultation.

This development marks a significant step toward greater legal and commercial integration within the Caribbean region.
