Guyana Port Inc. (GPI) has taken a significant step to improve the country’s waterways with the commissioning of a new $4 million dredger, a move set to boost trade and economic activities.
The Damen Cutter Suction Dredger 350, which was commissioned over the weekend, boasts a robust and efficient design that ensures low maintenance while maintaining navigability in Guyana’s waterways.
Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill, emphasized the critical role of waterways, noting that 80% of goods movement in the country is reliant on them due to their cost efficiency and capacity.
The new dredger is expected to facilitate the passage of larger vessels, thereby increasing trade volume and reducing associated costs.
Minister Edghill also encouraged private sector participation in transforming the sector to enhance the country’s maritime capabilities.
Pritipaul Singh Jr., Managing Director of GPI, highlighted that the investment aligns with Guyana’s broader goals of enhancing infrastructure to meet growing demands, positioning the country as a competitive player in global maritime trade.
This new development signals a promising future for Guyana’s maritime sector as the nation continues to push for sustainable growth through strategic investments in infrastructure.
