At a press conference held at Freedom House yesterday, PPP General Secretary and Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo emphasized that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) must remain focused on preparing for the 2025 general and regional elections, rather than being distracted by demands from the opposition.
Dr. Jagdeo responded to opposition calls for new procedures, suggesting that these demands were a deliberate attempt to delay the election process and create excuses for a potential loss.
He stressed the importance of GECOM being ready well ahead of the election date, aiming for preparedness by March 2025, following the swearing-in of the President in August 2024.
He further encouraged political parties to ensure they have robust polling agents in place and called for full compliance with the updated Representation of the People Act (ROPA), including the publication of statements of polls before the tabulation process.
These changes, he noted, have already been implemented.
With the elections scheduled for next year, Dr. Jagdeo’s message was clear: the focus should be on efficient preparations, rather than unnecessary obstacles.
