Guyana Police Force Launches National Road Safety Month Campaign Under the Theme “Do the Right Thing”

By Celestine Chacon | November 8, 2024

The Guyana Police Force has launched its National Road Safety Month campaign under the theme “Do the Right Thing,” focusing on reducing road fatalities and improving compliance with traffic regulations.

This initiative is part of the global effort under the United Nations Decade of Road Safety, which aims to cut road fatalities by 50 percent by 2030.

During the campaign launch, the Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, emphasized the importance of collective responsibility among road users, stakeholders, and enforcement agencies to achieve significant improvements in road safety.

He highlighted that sustained efforts and cooperation are essential to achieving safer roads across the country.

The Police Force reported a decline in road fatalities for 2024, attributing the reduction to various measures implemented throughout the year.

However, authorities noted that the numbers remain high and require continued vigilance and adherence to safety protocols.

Deputy Traffic Chief Shellon Daniels called on motorcyclists to prioritize safety by wearing helmets, obeying speed limits, and using designated lanes.

These measures are critical in preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of all road users.

Ongoing Road Safety Initiatives

As part of the Road Safety Month activities, several initiatives have been introduced to promote awareness and encourage safer practices. These include:

  • Formation of Police Youth Groups and School Road Safety Clubs.
  • Repainting of pedestrian crossings and other road markings.
  • Conducting road safety awareness sessions across the country.

The campaign aims to engage communities and foster a culture of responsible road use, contributing to the overall goal of reducing accidents and fatalities.

Road Safety Month activities will continue throughout November, highlighting the importance of adherence to traffic laws and proactive measures to ensure the well-being of all citizens.
