Sixteen-year-old Akwain Bowen from Linden has been selected to represent Guyana at the UNICEF’s 35th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, scheduled for November 20 in Panama.

Bowen, a fifth-form student at Mackenzie High School, was chosen following his active participation in group discussions on children’s rights, which were conducted across the country.

Bowen was among 56 children and teens who engaged in conversations about child rights, which ultimately led to his selection for this prestigious opportunity.

He believes that attending the convention will not only broaden his understanding of children’s rights but also provide him with the tools to educate others about their rights, especially those who may be unaware of violations.

Aspiring to become a lawyer, Bowen sees this experience as a crucial step toward his future career.

He feels that learning about children’s rights will enhance his legal skills, equipping him to assist those whose rights have been violated.

Bowen’s ambition to use this knowledge in his career is motivated by his desire to help children navigate legal challenges.

Bowen’s mother, Odessa Jones, expressed her immense pride in her son’s achievement.

She has always encouraged him to recognize his potential, and she views this opportunity as an important milestone in his journey towards realizing his dreams.

The convention will focus on regional and national issues, aiming to develop a position on children’s rights to justice and effective solutions.

Bowen’s participation is expected to contribute to this significant dialogue, fostering greater awareness and action on child rights across the globe.
