Major Expansion Planned for Eugene F. Correia International Airport

By Delicia Janneire | November 5, 2024

The Eugene F. Correia International Airport at Ogle is set to undergo significant expansion as part of the government’s commitment to modernizing Guyana’s aviation sector.

Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, made the announcement during the inaugural Caribbean Airlines flight to Suriname via the airport on Sunday.

The planned upgrades aim to address the increasing demand for departures and arrivals at the airport, which currently handles over 200 flights daily.

Minister Edghill revealed that the expansion will include enhanced seating accommodations for outgoing passengers, additional duty-free shopping options, and the creation of an executive lounge to support the growing number of executive jet operations at Ogle.

The project also anticipates extending the airport’s runway to accommodate larger aircraft, further enhancing the facility’s capacity to meet international travel standards.

Minister Edghill emphasized the importance of expanding cargo aircraft operations to support agricultural exports.

He highlighted the need for improved logistical connections to deliver products efficiently to regional destinations such as Barbados and Trinidad, with the potential to reach cruise ships, hotels, and restaurants globally.

In tandem with the airport expansion, the government continues to enhance road infrastructure connecting the airport to reduce travel time and facilitate smoother commutes for travelers.

The upgrades at Eugene F. Correia International Airport are part of the broader vision to transform Guyana’s aviation sector and support the country’s rapid economic growth.
