Guyanese citizens and animal activists have expressed their approval of the Vice President’s and the Protected Areas Commission’s plans for the modernization of the Botanical Gardens and Zoological Park.
These plans were discussed during a public consultation held on Friday afternoon, where hundreds of attendees voiced their concerns and suggestions for the project.
Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, who oversees the initiative, noted that the project is still in its early stages.
He emphasized that the planned facilities will focus on education and provide a safe space for families to enjoy the country’s natural beauty.
The vision for the new developments includes various educational systems, canopy walkways, electric trams for transportation, bird and animal viewing platforms, and immersive wildlife experiences.
Advisor to the Protected Areas Commission, Damian Fernandes, presented a detailed plan for the botanical gardens, which includes modern amenities designed to enhance the visitor experience while promoting environmental conservation.
Some attendees raised questions about expanding the zoo and the potential use of artificial intelligence to provide interactive experiences, such as AI-guided tours.
Others, including Melissa Ramdeen of Tails of Hope Animal Rescue, commended the project’s emphasis on conservation and animal welfare.
Suggestions were also made regarding accessibility for disabled visitors, with a call for certain privileges, such as free entry.
The Vice President assured the public that he would meet with animal rights groups in the coming weeks to address their concerns.
Additionally, an online platform will be launched for the wider public to submit feedback on the project.
