Cricket enthusiasts are set to enjoy more local matches as the One Guyana Local Franchise Cricket Cup was officially launched at the National Track and Field Facility in Leonora, West Coast Demerara.
The new tournament is designed to highlight local cricket talent and provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills.
Guyana’s Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., attended the launch and expressed the government’s commitment to supporting local cricket development.
He emphasized the importance of the tournament, particularly its potential to create a unique space in the cricketing world.
“This product has a space in the calendar that can do very well,” he said, adding that the inclusion of tape ball cricket on tarmac could fill a gap during the cricketing off-seasons.
Tournament organizer Deopersaud Lalta shared his excitement, stating, “Our goal is to bring a transparent, free, and fair tournament, and we expect it to run smoothly.”
He also expressed gratitude for the support from the Minister and the franchise owners.
The tournament will feature six franchise teams and will kick off on November 9, with additional match days scheduled for November 10 and 17.
All games will be held at the Leonora Track and Field Center, offering an accessible venue for the local community and cricket fans.
