October 24, 2024

The Department of Education in Region 10 recently organized a series of competitions as part of Cancer Awareness Month, engaging students from nursery to secondary levels in artistic and literary activities to promote awareness about breast cancer.

Young participants from various schools took part in painting, drawing, mural, and essay contests, all focusing on the theme “No one should face breast cancer alone.”

Nursery students displayed their creativity in painting and drawing, with Emanuel Bacchus from Christianburg Nursery earning first place for his artwork symbolizing hope for cancer patients and survivors.

Sophia Gray from South Amelia’s Ward secured second place with a depiction of the importance of early detection and family support, while Kayda Bizzeth from Middle Street took third with a piece highlighting the role of caregivers in the fight against cancer.

In the primary school category, Chrysti Williamson from Mackenzie Primary won first place with a painting that represented life after cancer treatment.

Second place was awarded to Tyrone Tappin from Wismar Hill, and Aditya Ramnarian of Bamia Primary came in third.

Secondary school students participated in both a mural competition and an essay contest.

In the mural competition, Unita John of New Silvercity took first place for her artwork symbolizing resilience in the face of cancer.

Japhlet Walks of Linden Foundation and Celene Giles of Christianburg Wismar earned second and third place, respectively.

The essay competition saw Anthony Johnson of Kwakwani Secondary win first place for his essay on the importance of community support for cancer patients, while Danielle Brutus from Mackenzie High and Jachie Walks from Linden Foundation placed second and third.

In addition to these competitions, the department also organized initiatives within schools to further promote cancer awareness.

Staff were encouraged to decorate their offices in pink as a show of support for cancer survivors.

Schools also participated by having students wear pink and create dedicated “pink corners” to honor those affected by cancer.

These activities are part of the department’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness and foster a sense of community support for those impacted by cancer.
