Prime Minister Phillips Calls for Unity and Peace at Diwali Mela

October 20, 2024

During the Diwali Mela organized by the Indian Commemoration Trust at Monument Gardens in Georgetown, Prime Minister Mark Phillips delivered a powerful message of unity, peace, and resilience.

The Prime Minister’s address highlighted the significance of Diwali’s spiritual lessons and how they can inspire individuals and communities to overcome challenges.

“Let the light of the diya inspire us to overcome the challenges we face both as individuals and as a country,” the Prime Minister stated.

He called for embracing the principles of Diwali, including kindness, generosity, and righteousness, to nurture peace, understanding, and prosperity within Guyana.

The lighting of the diya, a central Diwali tradition, was particularly symbolic for Prime Minister Phillips.

He explained that even in the darkest moments, the smallest flicker of light has the power to dispel the darkness, representing the inner qualities of hope, perseverance, and positivity.

The evening, which was filled with cultural performances such as dance, music, and art, was a celebration of Hindu culture, drawing families from the Hindu community to mark the Festival of Lights.

The Indian Commemoration Trust, which aims to promote Indian culture, played a key role in organizing the festive event.
