October 15, 2024

President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced that his government has invested over 7 billion dollars into the education sector in Region One over the past few years, aiming to enhance human resources and foster greater competitiveness.

In a breakdown of the government’s contributions to education in the region, President Ali outlined several key investments, including:

  • More than 1.8 billion dollars allocated under the “Because We Care Grant.”
  • Over 226 million dollars invested in school grants between 2023 and the present year.
  • 4 billion dollars spent on maintenance and construction of schools to improve teaching and learning environments.
  • Over 80 million dollars spent on textbooks for students in the region.

The President emphasized that these investments are leading to increased participation from indigenous communities in various fields, with over 50% of participants in the national nursing program and the officer cadet program in the Guyana Police Force, Guyana Defence Force, and other services coming from hinterland and riverine communities.

Region One has seen significant development across various sectors, including housing, education, health, and infrastructure, thanks to these strategic investments.
