Golden Jaguars Fall to Guatemala in Concacaf Nations League

October 12, 2024

A brace from Guatemala’s Oscar Santis sealed a 3-1 defeat for Guyana’s Golden Jaguars in their League A Concacaf Nations League match held at the National Track and Field Center in Leonora.

Guatemala took an early lead when Santis scored in the 17th minute, quieting the home crowd.

However, Guyana struck back in the 31st minute with an equalizer from Stephen Duke McKenna, igniting the home supporters.

The Golden Jaguars nearly went ahead in the 38th minute, but Isaiah Jones’s one-on-one attempt was blocked by Guatemalan goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen, leaving the match level at halftime.

In the second half, Guyana created another close-range opportunity off a free kick but couldn’t capitalize.

Guatemala then regained the lead in the 61st minute with a goal by Oscar Castellanos.

Santis extended Guatemala’s lead in the 68th minute, securing his second goal and sealing a 3-1 victory for the visitors.

This marks the Jaguars’ second consecutive loss. They will face Suriname next on Tuesday, October 13, at 8:00 PM.
