Guyana’s Healthcare Sector Anticipates Need for Over 6,000 Skilled Workers

As the government concludes its Manpower Survey, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, announced that Guyana’s healthcare sector will soon require over 6,000 skilled personnel to support the ongoing development of modern health facilities.

Dr. Jagdeo revealed to the media that the construction of six world-class hospitals will demand approximately 500 staff members each, including a variety of roles such as cleaners, porters, and drivers.

This equates to a total of about 3,000 personnel specifically for these new facilities.

In addition to the new hospitals, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), along with regional hospitals, will necessitate hundreds of additional staff.

Furthermore, the planned rehabilitation of existing hospitals in Linden, Bartica, and Georgetown will require an estimated additional 3,500 workers.

Dr. Jagdeo also mentioned that once the children and maternity units are relocated from the Georgetown Hospital, focus will shift to upgrading the facility itself, integrating green spaces and recreational areas into the hospital’s design.

The manpower survey indicates that the need for skilled workers extends beyond the healthcare sector.

The tourism and hospitality industry is expected to require an additional 3,000 to 4,000 workers as several new hotels are set to open in 2025.

To address these workforce needs, the government is actively training nurses and healthcare professionals, as well as providing hospitality training programs.
