The Everest Cricket Club recently unveiled its refurbished practice facility, honoring local and international cricket icon Dr. Shivnarine Chanderpaul.

The commissioning ceremony took place on Friday at the Camp Street venue, in collaboration with Republic Bank.

The newly revamped training facility is designed to enhance the resources available to young and aspiring cricketers, providing them with improved opportunities to develop their skills.

Dr. Chanderpaul, widely regarded as one of Guyana’s most celebrated cricketers, boasts an impressive career spanning over two decades and has represented the West Indies in more than 160 Test matches.

His unorthodox yet effective batting style has garnered admiration from fans and players alike.

Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., spoke at the event, expressing appreciation for Chanderpaul’s contributions to cricket in Guyana.

He emphasized that the opening of the facility symbolizes more than just a sports venue; it is a heartfelt tribute to Chanderpaul.

“Most of us here, if not all, are really here to honor you, Shiv, from the bottom of our hearts and with all sincerity,” he stated.

Stephen Grell, Managing Director of Republic Bank, highlighted the importance of the public-private partnership in establishing the facility, which aims to foster youth development in cricket.

He remarked, “This initiative is a collaboration of the private sector and the community in sports, aimed at encouraging the youth of Guyana in the sport of cricket.”

Chanderpaul himself expressed gratitude for the honor, hoping the facility would inspire future generations of cricketers.

Reflecting on his own journey, he shared, “I had to choose between cricket and school when I was 13, and I chose cricket. Now you have the opportunity where you don’t have to choose; everything is in place for you.”

The ceremony was attended by several key figures from the cricket community, including club officials, local players, and supporters, all celebrating this milestone achievement for the Everest Cricket Club and recognizing one of Guyana’s most revered sports figures.

The facility, which cost approximately 13.5 million Guyanese dollars, is set to become a vital training ground for both local and international players, further solidifying the Everest Cricket Club’s status as a premier cricketing destination in the region.
