Sir Shridath S. Ramphal, a highly respected statesman from Guyana and former Commonwealth Secretary-General, was laid to rest today at The Place of the Seven Ponds in the Botanical Gardens.
He passed away peacefully on August 30, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Born in 1928, Sir Shridath made significant contributions to Guyana’s foreign policy and was a key figure in the global effort against apartheid in Southern Africa.
His influence reached far beyond his home country, earning him international acclaim for his diplomatic work.
During the ceremony, President Irfaan Ali emphasized Sir Shridath’s unwavering commitment to Guyana and his pivotal role in shaping the country’s legal and diplomatic landscape.
He also reiterated Sir Shridath’s vision for regional unity, urging Caribbean nations to continue working towards integration, a cause that the statesman championed throughout his life.
Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton reflected on Sir Shridath’s legacy, acknowledging his humility, patriotism, and foresight, which not only impacted Guyana but also had a lasting effect on global affairs.
CARICOM Chairman and Grenada’s Prime Minister, Keith Mitchell, highlighted Sir Shridath’s contributions to the region, particularly in promoting cooperation and development across the Caribbean.
Sir Shridath’s legacy as a diplomat and visionary will continue to be an important part of Guyana’s history and its international presence.
