Dwayne Scott, the President of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA), has announced that he will not seek re-election when his term concludes next month.
This decision comes in the wake of recent developments that have seen GASA deemed “Persona Non Grata” by both the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and the National Sports Commission (NSC).
Scott emphasized that he has always adhered to the decisions of the general counsel guiding the Association, maintaining that GASA’s operations are in line with their constitution and the regulations set forth by their governing body, World Aquatics.
The move by the GOA and NSC follows a decision to strip swimming of its status as a core sport in Guyana.
This action was preceded by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport’s announcement that it would no longer provide financial support to GASA, citing irregularities in the administration of the sport.
According to a joint statement from the NSC and GOA, multiple attempts to address various complaints against GASA, including issues of biased selection processes, exclusion from competitive events, and financial misconduct, have been unsuccessful.
The statement detailed concerns over unresponsive executive actions, nepotism, and unconstitutional practices within the Association.
Consequently, the NSC and GOA have declared that GASA is no longer recognized as a sports association in good standing and will cease engagement with its current executive.
The GOA and NSC plan to formally communicate with World Aquatics to report the alleged mismanagement and unethical practices affecting swimmers in Guyana.
