Grenada Seeks Partnership with Guyana in Agriculture and Energy Sectors

By Kristin Josiah

Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has emphasized his government’s intention to collaborate with Guyana in key sectors such as sustainable energy generation, poultry production, and spice cultivation.

These partnerships are vital for Grenada’s goals of enhancing food security and boosting its tourism industry.

Grenada, renowned for its spice production, including nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves, faces land constraints that hinder further agricultural expansion.

Prime Minister Mitchell has proposed leveraging Guyana’s vast agricultural land resources to address this limitation.

This initiative aligns with Grenada’s commitment to sustainable development and Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy.

In addition to spice production, Grenada is keen to address its poultry needs by partnering with Guyana.

Currently, Grenada imports all its poultry products, and Mitchell believes regional cooperation can help meet this demand and improve food security.

Furthermore, Mitchell expressed support for Guyana’s objective of providing renewable energy to the Caribbean region.

He sees Guyana’s efforts in sustainable energy as an integral part of regional development, particularly for businesses in the Caribbean.

Prime Minister Mitchell’s visit to Guyana, which concluded on Friday, included a Tourism, Trade, and Investment Mission.

The four-day event featured a Trade Expo, Business Forum, and the “Taste of Grenada” event, aimed at promoting Grenada’s offerings.

A new direct flight route between Grenada and Guyana is set to commence on September 28, 2024, with InterCaribbean Airways providing weekly services on Saturdays.
