At the recent National Toshaos’ Conference (NTC), Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Sonia Parag, detailed the substantial investments made by the government in Amerindian villages since taking office in 2020.

With approximately $13.1 billion allocated across various programs, the government’s commitment to improving the lives of Amerindians was a key focus of her address.

Minister Parag highlighted specific allocations including $3.4 billion for public works, $3.2 billion for health services, $6.1 billion for education, and $448 million for agriculture.

These investments, in addition to funds from the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and other sector-specific programs, aim to enhance infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities in hinterland communities.

The minister also discussed the part-time job initiative, which supports around 3,400 individuals across Amerindian villages.

This program, introduced by President Ali and Vice President Jagdeo, aims to cushion the cost of living and provide income while developing new skills for participants.

Minister Parag reaffirmed the government’s dedication to investing in indigenous communities and strengthening local democracy across the country.
