Women aged 21 to 65 are being strongly encouraged to undergo screening for cervical cancer, which remains the second most prevalent cancer in Guyana.
Early detection and treatment of cervical cancer can lead to effective cures and improved quality of life, according to Dr. Lachmie Lall, Director of the Non-Communicable Disease Programme at the Ministry of Health.
Cervical cancer is largely preventable, with most cases linked to infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), the same virus that causes genital warts.
Dr. Lall highlighted that recognizing symptoms such as unusual discharges can prompt timely medical examination.
To support screening efforts, the Ministry of Health offers an $8,000 voucher through its Cervical Cancer Screening Programme.
Dr. Lall urges women to take advantage of this initiative to ensure early detection and treatment.
