Government Advances Digital and Energy Projects for Amerindian Communities

By Josiah Williams

The Guyanese government is actively working to bridge the digital and energy divide between hinterland and coastland communities, reaffirming its commitment to equitable development.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips highlighted these efforts during his address at the National Toshaos Conference.

The government has already introduced high-speed internet to several communities across regions 1, 2, 5, and parts of region 6.

By December, the goal is to connect 250 Amerindian communities with internet speeds exceeding 200 megabytes per second, extending connectivity to regions 6, 7, and 8.

In addition to internet expansion, the government is focused on bridging the energy gap by deploying solar and other renewable energy technologies.

Currently, 31 communities are benefiting from micro grids and solar PV systems, with plans to build five additional systems in large communities this year.

Large solar farms are also under construction in Mahdia, Kumu, and Moco, with completed projects in Bartica, Lethem, and Mabaruma.

The Prime Minister assured that all Indigenous communities will receive their full allocation of solar PV home systems before the end of the year.
