While celebrating Emancipation in New Amsterdam, Berbice, President Dr. Irfaan Ali unveiled plans for the creation of Guyana’s first National Cultural Market in Palmyra, Region Six.
The announcement was made during a vibrant Emancipation programme organized by the Regional Democratic Council in collaboration with OSHAG and the United Bricklayers at the New Amsterdam Technical Institute.
In his address, President Ali urged the audience to reflect on the sacrifices made by African ancestors that paved the way to freedom.
He explained that the upcoming National Cultural Market would serve as a lasting symbol of the importance of preserving and promoting Guyana’s diverse culture.
Consultations on the market’s design are set to begin within the next six weeks, with the President confident that it will be completed by the end of next year.
The market will showcase elements of Guyanese culture, including food, clothing, dance, music, and art, all deeply rooted in the country’s history and heritage.
President Ali emphasized that this initiative aims to bring people together and celebrate the cultural contributions of Guyana’s ancestors.
Senior Minister within the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance and Public Service, Dr. Ashni Singh, Regional Vice Chairman Zamal Hussain, and Regional Executive Officer Narindra, along with other government officials, were also present at the event, commemorating the end of a dark chapter in history and the beginning of freedom.
