WI Women Clinch T20I Series Against Sri Lanka

In a thrilling conclusion to their T20I series against Sri Lanka, the West Indies women’s cricket team staged a remarkable comeback to clinch a 2-1 victory.

The decisive match, held amidst high anticipation, saw both teams battling intensely at the crease.

Sri Lanka, batting first after losing the toss, set a target of 142 runs for victory, finishing their innings at 141 for 7 in 20 overs.

Led by their skipper Chamari Athapaththu, who scored 38 runs off 38 balls, and supported by Hars-hit-ha Samara-wick-rama (28 runs) and Kavisha Dilhari (26 runs), Sri Lanka aimed to defend their total with determination.

However, the West Indies bowlers put up a disciplined effort, with Aaliyah Alleyne and Afy Fletcher both claiming 2 wickets for 25 runs each.

Chinelle Henry and Karishma Ramharack also contributed with a wicket apiece, keeping the Sri Lankan batsmen in check.

In response, the West Indies women’s team displayed resilience and skill right from the start of their innings.

Openers Stefanie Taylor and Hayley Matthews provided a solid foundation, with Taylor contributing 33 runs before her departure.

Matthews, in exceptional form, struck 49 runs, including five boundaries, while anchoring the innings.

The partnership between Matthews and Shermaine Campbelle (41 runs) further bolstered the West Indies’ chase, guiding them to the brink of victory with a score of 142 for 4 in just 19.5 overs.

This victory was particularly significant for the West Indies, as it marked a comeback after losing the first match of the series.

Their win in the second match, determined by the Duckworth-Lewis method, set the stage for their triumphant performance in the final T20I.

Earlier in the tour, Sri Lanka had dominated the three-match ODI series, securing a clean sweep.

The West Indies women’s team’s victory underscores their strength and adaptability in international cricket, showcasing their ability to overcome challenges and perform under pressure.

This achievement will undoubtedly boost their confidence as they continue to compete at the highest level in women’s cricket.
