GRFU President Assesses ‘Green Machine’ Future Following Loss to Trinidad and Tobago

By Travis Seymour

Ryan Dey, President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), has acknowledged the need for introspection following the national 15s team’s defeat against Trinidad and Tobago at Camp Ayanganna’s GDF ground.

Despite disappointment with the team’s performance, Dey pointed out positive aspects observed during their recent matches with Trinidad and Tobago.

He emphasized the developmental phase the team is going through after their 26-3 loss, highlighting promising signs from their recent encounters.

Looking ahead, Dey outlined the GRFU’s agenda, focusing on preparations for the national Under-19 and 7s squads.

He noted the upcoming Rugby Americas North (RAN) annual Sevens tournament scheduled for November 23-24 in Trinidad and Tobago at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima.

In their recent match, Trinidad and Tobago demonstrated dominance on Guyanese turf, controlling the game throughout.

Despite an initial penalty kick by Guyana’s Godfrey Broomes, Trinidad and Tobago took the lead with Jonathan Taylor’s try in the 33rd minute, followed by Anderson Joseph’s hat-trick of tries and Christopher Hutson’s conversions, securing a 26-3 victory.

Earlier in April, Guyana narrowly defeated Trinidad and Tobago 24-23 in Port-of-Spain, setting the stage for competitive future matchups.

Looking forward, the GRFU aims to regroup and strategize for upcoming competitions, aiming to strengthen their international rugby presence.
