Government Initiative Grants Homeownership to Low-Income Families on East Coast Demerara

In a significant move under the government’s Core Home Support initiative, six low-income families along the East Coast of Demerara celebrated the realization of their homeownership dreams by receiving keys to their new residences.

This initiative, funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, aims to empower vulnerable Guyanese by providing them with stable housing solutions.

Under the Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility Programme, which spans Regions Three and Four, approximately 110 families, including the recent beneficiaries, have gained ownership of their homes.

Each dwelling, valued at five million Guyanese dollars, required beneficiaries to contribute a nominal sum of $100,000.

Upon receiving the keys to their new homes, emotions ran high among the recipients who expressed deep gratitude for the government’s support.

Sonita, one of the new homeowners, thanked the Minister of Finance and everyone involved, highlighting the transformative impact on her family’s life.

Nigel John, another beneficiary, praised the government’s efforts in ensuring that even those with limited financial means can secure decent housing, emphasizing the role of such initiatives in national development.

Looking forward, the initiative plans to benefit a total of 323 families across Regions Three and Four, with 188 homes currently in the procurement phase and others actively under construction.
