Silica City Advances with Housing Construction

By Nakasia Logan

Silica City, a visionary urban development project situated along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, is making significant strides towards becoming Guyana’s pioneering ‘smart’ urban center.

Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, announced that construction of the initial phase of over seventy houses is well underway, marking a crucial step in the project’s implementation.

During a recent outreach event at Base Road Timehri, Minister Croal provided updates on the development, emphasizing the collaborative efforts between his ministry and Miami University in formulating a comprehensive master plan for Silica City.

This master plan is set to be unveiled at the upcoming International Building Exposition scheduled from August 8th to 11th.

Despite the progress, challenges remain regarding informal settlers occupying certain areas along the highway.

Minister Croal acknowledged these complexities, highlighting ongoing efforts to regularize some settlements while preparing for a large-scale relocation program for others.

Sherwyn Greaves, CEO of the Central Housing and Planning Authority, underscored Silica City’s broader significance beyond its physical infrastructure.

Speaking at the launch of the Building Expo themed “Building on the Foundation of Sustainability and Unity,” Greaves positioned Silica City as a model for sustainable urban living.

He emphasized the city’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and energy-saving technologies, setting a new standard for modern urban development.

Silica City, conceptualized under the leadership of President Irfaan Ali, aims not only to enhance residential living but also to pioneer environmental sustainability and community resilience in urban planning.
